About us
Polaria is the world’s northernmost aquarium and Northern Norway’s largest indoor attraction. Located in the heart of Tromsø, just a short walk from the city centre and overlooking the sea, Polaria offers more than just an experience – it takes you on a journey through the Arctic.
We are the only place in Europe where you can meet bearded seals up close. You can also explore our Arctic aquarium filled with species from the region, experience spectacular panoramic films, and discover interactive exhibitions designed to engage and inspire visitors of all ages.
Polaria is a non-profit foundation. This means that we have no owners or shareholders who receive dividends. Our revenue is used to operate and further develop Polaria in accordance with the foundation’s purpose.
Our purpose is to make knowledge about the Arctic, climate and marine environment accessible to the public. Our funds are therefore reinvested in areas such as animal welfare, exhibitions, education, maintenance and the development of new experiences.
When you buy a ticket, shop in our gift shop or take part in one of our experiences, you are helping us continue our work to promote knowledge, engagement and understanding of the Arctic.
We collaborate with the Fram Centre, one of Norway’s leading research communities, and make scientific research accessible to the public through unique exhibitions.
As a centre dedicated to sharing knowledge about the Arctic, climate and marine environment, Polaria has a particular responsibility to reduce our own environmental footprint. Sustainability is therefore an integral part of how we develop experiences, care for our animals, operate our building, and choose products, suppliers and partners.
Polaria is Eco-Lighthouse certified. The certification sets specific requirements for systematic environmental management in areas such as energy, waste, procurement, transport and the working environment. It also requires us to document our results and continuously work towards improvement.
We are also working towards certification under ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management, and ISO 9001, which sets requirements for quality management and effective processes. Together, these standards will help us set clear goals, follow up on measures and ensure that environmental and quality considerations are integrated throughout the organisation.
For us, sustainability is about both how we operate Polaria today and how we contribute to greater knowledge and understanding of the Arctic. Through exhibitions, live animals and research-based communication, we aim to help visitors understand how human choices affect nature and life in the Arctic.
We have 36 employees across three departments: administration, the aquarium, reception and the gift shop.
